Negi and Asuna by shiroboi Negi and Asuna by shiroboi
I did this piece for Otakon 2009. I'm a big fan of Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina). His latest work, Mahou Sensei Negima is a really great manga. I'm not wild about his overuse of fanservice but I do really like his story, art and characters. If you can tolerate harem anime/manga its definitely worth a read. This scene is just a mash up of the main two characters later on in the series. Enjoy!

Right but if you look at it you can see that kinda grain you get from low quality jpegs.

The original is a 600 dpi clean image that looks awesome when blown up. If there's any quality loss, its on DA's end. I just looked at it again, and DA is using a stronger jpeg compression that is causing those little off color pixels. The original is flawless, well, at least there's no jpeg distortion.

Beautiful piece as always :3 I really like the way in which you have lit the characters - weird as that sounds :P

I kinda used some of the original colors to make it pop a bit but had to change some because of the lighting. I wanted to make it a bit warmer. Cel shading is fun. I wonder if people like cel shading more than my airbrushing style.

As always I love the composition and poses in this picture. I like how the staff and other weapon lead the eyes outside of the picture. This creates a really nice zig zag that brings attention to the whole entire drawing. I only have two complaints. The clouds seem too solid and unnatural. I would blend them a little more to the sky. I also think asuna eye should be pushed slightly forward to her nose. This could be just your style and you don't have to change it, but the eye bothers me a little. Hope I could be of some help.

I think those are very good comments. Unfortuantely, I'm a bit rushed right now. Its already formatted for printing otherewise I'd probably go back and change it. I did hit the clouds with a blur filter but maybe it didn't do enough. Thanks!

Wow, this is great!! Love Hina was the first manga I ever read, in elementary school! (Don't ask how I got away with reading something like that so young, lol.) On the critique side, I think it's a solid piece with a great dynamic composition/poses.

I only read the first few volumes of Negima. Did Asuka turn into an android or something? :O

No, she doesn't turn into an android. There is Chakkamaru who is a robot. Asuna gets her big sword and a partial suit of armor later on.

Yeah, that's her weapon. It nullifies magic which is a very good ability to have.

For this picture, I drew both characters on the same piece of paper to make sure that I got the pose right. It's not perfect but I'm fairly happy with it.

Thats what you'd think but faving something and buying something aren't always the same. Some stuff sells great at one con and not the other. Some things are popular on DA and they're not so popular in real life.

But DA definitely gives me some insight to how the public likes my artwork. Definitely helps plan how many prints I'm going to produce.

Yeah that is definatly true  but it does mean people like it and they show interest, those are important factors that people need to be convinced to actually buying it :giggle:

Yeah indeed  hihihi, the idea of selling your work at a anime convention, it sounds really exiting! :giggle:...it can be disapointing if no one is interested ofcourse =(

yes and marketing and pricing are just as important as the art itself. Theres a good bit to it but it can be very rewarding when people like your art and want to buy it.
